“The Sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught.” (Isaiah 50:4, NIV)
Lacking wisdom? Feeling weary? God’s Word, Isaiah says, both instructs and sustains. When I come to know His truth, then I come to know His character and His heart. Meditation and memorization of scripture directs me, teaches me, and strengthens me.
My friend—a tired, busy mom of four—began to pray this verse every night before she went to sleep. For several weeks, she woke up early each morning, before her alarm sounded, sensing that God himself had “wakened her ear to listen” to Him. During those weeks, my friend experienced the Lord in a way that she never had before.
It reminds me of a song by MercyMe. “The last thing I need is to be heard, but to hear what You would say. Word of God, speak.” Isaiah and my friend discovered that God does speak. His Word sustains and instructs. I only need to listen.
God, speak! I am weary and in need of wisdom; will You waken my ear to listen like one being taught? Thank You for Your Word. Amen.
