Matthew 10-11

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

This is one of those scriptures that I’ve heard before–that even though I wasn’t brought up in a Christian home, I recognized it. As I read these chapters, this passage was underlined from about twenty years ago and I decided to land here. I found myself wondering how to make this work for me. It sounds easy enough, especially when I don’t have to put it in practice. But how does one find rest in the Lord in the midst of ongoing trials? During times of stress, depression, frustration and obstacles, how do we take on His yoke?

I will give you rest … rest for your souls. Stuff can be going wildly around me, but as I seek Jesus in his words, or meditate on his love, I will find rest–maybe not from the trial at hand, but for my soul. It sounds awfully idealistic sometimes in the midst of problems. But if I am able to block out all the distractions vying to take me away from the Lord, I will find rest. Why do I not seek the Lord before I reach the weary point?

Father, your word is truth. I want to reach out to you daily. I pray that I would seek you earnestly and before the point that I am weary. Amen.
