Exodus 22 John 1 Job 40 2 Corinthians 10

Scripture:

John 1:1-5&14, 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. 14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Observation:

This is one of those great passages of Scripture that underscore the Deity of Jesus Christ. Here The Word is spoken of in the first five verses of John as having the following qualities/activities:

  1. In the beginning was the Word.
  2. The Word was with God.
  3. The Word created the universe.
  4. The Word is the light of the world.
  5. The Word is God.

We find later in verse 14 who this Word is. This Word is Jesus Christ who came to save us from our sins and give us eternal life. In our church growing up we participated in a program sponsored by Bible Memory Association. We memorized sections of the Bible and received rewards for doing so and a free week of camp if we completed the books for our age level for the given year we were in. I went to camp several times. One year I had the good fortune of having to memorize John 1. The opening five verses of this chapter separate us from the religions of the world. It’s one of the key passages in all of Scripture.

Application:

So, what do we do with these words? What do I do with them? First, it’s a great comfort to know I am worshiping the creator of the world. A Person who has been around really since before the beginning. Second, He came to us in human likeness so that we could realize the whole plan of salvation and believe in Him for ours. Third, this Word is full of grace and truth. If we want to be fully accepted by the God of the universe, we have been through the Word, through Jesus. Perfect truth is found in Him. We can hold all the truth claims in the world up to Him. If they don’t hold, they are not the truth. He is. Fourth, when people have come knocking on my door I have held the truth of this passage up to what they are peddling. If their god isn’t the Word as revealed in these verses I know to stay clear and to help them see the grace and truth this Word brings to them as well.

Prayer:

Father God thank You that Your Son is the creator of all we see. That He is the source of grace and truth. Thank You that we can put our trust in Him and that He will never fail. Help us to walk through today confident of this fact and live life in new ways because of it. I pray these things in the wonderful Name of Jesus, Amen.
