The men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the LORD. Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.

King David asked for protection from the lies and schemes of others. A neighboring nation lied about their proximity to Israel to save themselves from death. Consequently, Israel swore an oath on the name of the Lord God of Israel to honor a treaty with them. Israel never consulted God in the matter. It appears God’s name had already become just a swear word.
Am I really any different? With the same mouth I praise God and talk coarsely. I am lying to myself by acting as if this doesn’t matter? Because of Jesus my sins are forgiven. However, I would be wise to inquire of God before I open my mouth. A better use of my tongue would be to pray for protection from myself as well as those who would wish me ill.
Lord, Set a guard over my heart and mouth so that I won’t sin against You or those you have created in your image. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen.
