Encountering God. He speaks in dreams, His Word, through others. He is a whisper overhead or an urging in the heart … He is evident in the silence–an anonymous act of kindness, a spectacular sunset in an autumn sky, even the puzzling disappearance of lung cysts from a CT scan.
When Paul writes:
I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. Ephesians 1:18-19 (NIV)
I read and I see … in Him.
The friend who lost her job in a tough economy, and the one who didn’t; a family trying to find their fit in a new environment and making tough decisions through His leading; a mom of seven in stage four cancer and her amazing witness of peace; a friend’s heart healed by a hug; a believer who reaches out to an unbeliever with a book (and the latter found encouragement to pay it forward to others with broken hearts in search of healing!); an inbox of prayers; a house for sale and a hope in His Word.
God encounters. And when I open my eyes, I can see Him at work all around me and in the lives of others. I see hope, and riches, and His incomparably great power.
God says, “I myself will search for my sheep and look after them.” He rescues us when we are scattered and in darkness. He searches for the lost and brings back the strays. He binds up the injured and strengthens the weak. He breaks the bars of our yoke and rescues from hands that enslave.
The lengths He goes to meet us and let us encounter Him.
Lord, continue to open the eyes of my heart. Amen.
