I love Psalm 16. Perfect for my reading today. I read it about 15 times. As a federal government contractor the last few months have been quite uncertain. While I’m pretty sure I’m heading to work on Monday morning, it could very well be into even more chaos. [And to be totally honest I was secretly hoping for a little time off…] I could use some assurance today and this gives me a big dose to last… at least through the weekend… I hope…
The first verse gets things off to a great start:
Keep me safe, my God,
for in you I take refuge.
I love that. It’s pure and simple. Just what I need. Then the psalmist speaks of the good that the saints enjoy, and the sorrows that come with chasing other gods. Good reminders. Then later the psalm closes with:
Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest secure,
because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
You make known to me the path of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
I am so glad to know the path of life. I look around me and it breaks my heart what I see sometimes. Those that are not on the path of life may never know the true joy that comes in the presence of God. I am so amazed that I can look forward to eternal pleasures at His right hand!
Sometimes I feel so secure about my earthly future, and other times it frightens me to death. Proverbs 27:1 tells us
Do not boast about tomorrow,
for you do not know what a day may bring.
The more days and years I spend on this earth the more I get that. But instead of being overly confident OR frightened, I need to rest in the blessed assurance conveyed in Psalm 16. God’s assurance. Pure and simple. Thank you, Lord.
