2 Samuel 18; 2 Corinthians 11; Ezekiel 25; Psalm 73

Psalm 73:12, “Behold, these are the wicked;

always at ease, they increase in riches.”

That’s how things seem when we look on the outside. They’ve got it all together. The nicer cars, the perfect houses, the dream jobs.  Jaw-dropping travel itineraries. Kids in the best schools. Even a few volunteer roles to keep them well-rounded and grounded. We look on the outside, knowing their insides are not right with God and we slip into the comparison game. Yet, our scale is measuring filthy rags rather than true riches.

We look at what is physically visible, like the vain Absalom that Israel hated even as David still showered him with the love only a father could muster.

We glory in the material world that God created to bless us, and yet it has now been put in His place.

As we see how we measure up we aren’t even measuring what matters. Paul pointed out the foolishness of boasting in human accomplishments. If we want to, he had a list, but he knew the folly of going there.

These chapters go on to give us God’s perspective:

Psalm 73:23,

“Nevertheless, I am continually with you;

you hold my right hand.

24 You guide me with your counsel,

and afterward you will receive me to glory.

25 Whom have I in heaven but you?

And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.

26 My flesh and my heart may fail,

but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

Our true inheritance could not be contained in the whole earth!

2 Corinthians 11:30 If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.

We may as well not waste our time boasting in our supposed strengths, because they are nothing in the long run. Boast in our weakness, because those are what really give God something to work with. Our humility allows His glory to shine.

Lord, help me to keep your portfolio in mind as I judge what matters in this life. Thank you for patiently showing me the truth of who You are and for choosing to use me in all my weaknesses. ~Amen
