For years, the culture has tried to push the idea that we are all basically good when you get down to the core. The idea pushes the thought that it is our circumstances that cause us to make bad choices and all things being equal, we would do the right thing. Obviously our circumstances can push us, but I think it is our natural tendency to move away from God rather than toward Him. I mean if you look at the world around us compared to even just a few years ago, you can see that movement pretty easily.
David and Solomon both understood this and prayed for God to help them stay focused. They asked God to show them right and wrong because they knew that the heart of man could not be trusted in the end. They knew that only those who trusted in God and drew close to Him could have this discernment.
“Keep me as the apple of Your eye; Hide me under the shadow of Your wings, From the wicked who oppress me, from my deadly enemies who surround me.” Psalm 17:8-9 NKJV
“Evil men do not understand justice.” Proverbs 28:5 NKJV
We who have trusted in Christ do have it a little easier in that we have God dwelling in us with the Holy Spirit. Of course this presence creates within us, uneasiness because we are not home yet. We long for the world we live in to make sense given our internal identity. We long for the return of Christ to set things right. Unfortunately, it will get worse before it gets better. That’s why Paul tells us to hold on and be steadfast.
“we ask you, not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter,…Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed; 2 Thess. 2:1b-3 NKJV
So evil is real and will grow in strength as time goes on. More and more will call evil good and we will be frustrated. But God’s victory is already won and those who persevere will be rewarded. The Day will come.
“Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work.” 2 Thess. 2:16-17 NKJV
Oh, by the way…all i’ll say about Leviticus is wow. So glad we are free in Christ and no longer under the law.
