Imagine climbing to the top of a hill and seeing a “vast army” heading your way and bent on your destruction. Jehoshaphat could have had a meltdown, but instead he resolved to find out what God had to say about the situation. He and the people of Judah fasted and joined each other in asking the Lord for help.
Jehoshaphat’s public prayer is rich in praise and humility. He stands confident knowing that he is powerless to change the situation and that God is his defender. I love what he says to God, “For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you.” 2 Chronicles 20:12
God sent Jahaziel with his word, “This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.’ ” God repeated, ” ‘ Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.’ ” 2 Chronicles 20:15…17. Jehoshaphat and Judah responded by falling to the ground and worshipping the Lord.
The day’s battle plan was to send out a force chosen by Jehoshaphat to sing to God and praise him for his beauty and splendor. As they went out, the Lord defeated Judah’s enemies by setting out ambushes. The enemy literally self destructed by turning on one another.
So the question is, what vast army is bent on your destruction? A bad diagnosis, mounting bills, a job loss, a broken marriage? What was true for Jehoshaphat is true for us. Our strength is standing and recognizing the One who holds our fate in his hands- the God who is in heaven and rules over ALL kingdoms. Our battle plan is to call out to the God who makes us, loves us and praise him for who He is no matter what the outcome.
Lord, you hold us close to your heart; everything is in your hands. When enemies head our way, strengthen our hearts, protect us from discouragement and fill our hearts and mouths with songs for you. May your beauty, your salvation take hold of our lives. Amen.
