Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
Jesus, as the writer of Colossians testified, you are the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation, for all things in heaven and on earth were created by you—all things, whether visible or invisible, whether thrones or dominions, whether principalities or powers—all things were created through you and for you. You are before all things and all things hold together in you.
But your power doesn’t cease in your ultimate authority. You used your strength to help the weak. You leveraged your grandiosity to exalt the voiceless. And you became the author and champion of our faith.
For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.
You conquered death and the grave!
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
You took on flesh and took my place.
Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
You were tempted in every way that I have been and will, and yet were victorious.
For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
The example of humility you have set, to use your power for the good of the disadvantaged, calls me up to a higher standard of living. I don’t want to live just for myself. You denied the comforts of heaven to reach down and help the lowly. Why should I make my life about my own comfort when you have put so much ability in my hands to use to help others?
I want to be more like you.
