Exodus 19-21; Psalm 33; Ephesians 5

For the word of the Lord is right and true;

he is faithful in all he does…

By the word of the Lord were the heavens made

their starry host by the breath of his mouth…

from Psalm 33.

Here I sit with the word of God in front of me. It’s the very breath of God that created the heavens, the earth, all that is outside and within me. The privilege of this is stunning. I read through the Psalm a second and a third time. The truth of this is beyond my understanding. I feel like a child dipping their toe in the ocean and trying to understand its vastness and complexity. All I can comprehend is the sensation of water on my skin as I swim beneath a wave and pop back up to find that the air and sky are still there. There’s this huge ocean that I swim in; my knowledge of it is so limited and yet its wonder invites me back in. I can’t get enough of it.

God’s love brought David to a place of wonder; it was there that he found healing and forgiveness. His personal life was a mess; adultery, murder, rebellious children, a string of broken relationships that materialized into attempts on his life. His righteousness was never found in an orderly, well behaved life. It was waiting for him in repentance and the loving grace-filled presence of God.

Paul discovered the all consuming wonder and love when he met Jesus, the Word-made-flesh. He discovered what it meant to live in this love. Today, his words to Ephesian believers tell me how to live the Christ transformed life and become my prayer:

Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:1,2

Live as children of light(for the fruit of light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Ephesians 5:8-10

Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:19-22.

 Lord, make my life one of love, a life delights in imitating you, Jesus.

Show me what that means today.

Teach me what pleases you and help me in the doing.

Fill this heart with wonder and gratitude for all that you are, all that you’ve done and will do.

Give my heart a song to sing to you and show me how to point others to you.

May all this be born out of the wonder of your love for me.

Amen.
