1Samuel 20; 1Chronicles 4; Psalms 56, 57 and 142

I will be at peace when…

I will be content when…

I will worship God from the deepest places of my heart when…

….When money isn’t so tight.

…When the college loans are paid off.

…When I am no longer sick.

…When the broken heart no longer grieves.

…When I marry the one of my dreams.

…When my spouse loves me as he/she should.

…When I have enough in my 401K.

The list goes on and on; life goes by and we can find ourselves telling God that things are not the way they should be. Tides turn;  favorable circumstances flow back out to sea only to be replaced by trouble and insecurity. And the cycle repeats itself.  True love, joy and contentment can be allusive, like a fish slipping out of a clenched fist and jumping back into the water.

How was it then that an innocent man, accused of treason and hunted down like a murderous criminal found himself hiding in the dark recesses of a cave? How was it that this man could call out to God?

“When I am afraid, I will trust in you.

In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust:I will not be afraid.

What can mortal man do to me?”

Psalm 56:3-4

“Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in you my soul takes refuge.

I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed.

I cry out to God most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.”

Psalm 57:2-3

“My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast: I will sing and make music.”

Psalm 57:7

David tells us that now is the time to pray, to worship, to find peace. In God alone we find protection and strength.

O Lord, give me the steadfast heart of David who suffered through dark and painful circumstances yet chose to dwell on your goodness and love for him. Lord help me to love you and praise you from deep within at all times. Thank you for the gift of life. I am your beloved child living under your protection. You will fulfill your purpose for me. In you I trust.  Amen.
