“In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” Job 12:10
“He makes the nations great and destroys them; he enlarges nations and dispenses them.” Job 12:23
What is true for the individual is true for the nations. Our existence is dependent upon God the Creator. We are witnessing one of the world’s greatest waves of immigration as hundreds of thousands risk their lives to flee their homes and find refuge in Europe. Chaos and confusion abounds, but not for God. Life and death, war and peace have been going on ever since Adam and Eve left the Garden. The Bible bears witness to this and assures us that God sees and understands. He does not stand indifferent and in the distance.
What shall we do? Despair? Join forces with Henny Penny and declare that the sky is falling? Job offers a much more solid response:
“Though he slay me, yet I will hope in him… If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait for my renewal to come. You will call and I will answer you; you will long for the creature your hands have made.” Job 13:15… Job 14:14-15.
The Psalmist grabs hold of our fearful hearts and anchors them in the reality of the Kingdom of God:
“Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.” Psalm 100:3
Our hearts and minds need not give way to fear and anxiety. God is real and He sees all; He is near and He will not leave us. May He give us the grace to follow him faithfully.
