2 Samuel 1-2; 1 Chronicles 11; Psalm 96, 106; Acts 21

Psalm 106: Praise the LORD.[a]

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.

47 Save us, Lord our God, and gather us from the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise.

48 Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting.

Let all the people say, “Amen!”

Praise the LORD.

The world feels like it is spinning out of control around us, doesn’t it? Turn on the news on any given day, at any given time and there are mass murders, natural disasters, and all kinds of devastation.  The world we live in is telling us that what innately feels like it is right, pure, and true to us (let alone what the Word of God says) is wrong; and if we think otherwise, we are not tolerant, we are misguided, and we need to accept these perversions.  How do we live in this world?  I think Psalm 106 gives us insight into this.  It begins and ends with the same three words:  Praise the LORD.

Psalm 106 reminds us of all that God did for the Israelites and all they did as they assimilated into the world outside their Egyptian slavery instead of holding fast to Him and obeying Him exactly as He said. It is a litany of his provision and lovingkindness.  It also talks about his anger and how he allowed them to be overtaken by their enemies and taken captive because of their disobedience. It talks about all the sin that ensnared them in the world in which they lived.  Then, He would deliver them only for them to go back to their old ways. How many times have I walked the same walk as the Israelites?  How do I keep from totally giving up on this world, from my circumstances, from my own tendency to sin?

Praise is the only way we can get through each day. It keeps us focused on what is good in our life–God!  It is how we get through grief, loss, pain, illness, fear, and any crisis that comes our way. It changes our attitude and our focus from the things of this world to our Heavenly Father who is in control. Our God is good.  His sovereignty is greater than anything we can understand.  His plans and ways are higher than ours.  For those of us who believe, we know how the story ends.  We can praise Him for His faithfulness; we can praise Him for his plan and His provision.  We can praise Him for His unfailing love. We can praise Him for his creativity and for His creation. We can praise Him for Jesus and His plan of redemption.  We need to place Him in His rightful place.  Then we can praise Him despite our circumstances because, just as He never left the Israelites through all their trials, He will never leave us.  We are His Beloved!  One day all people, tribes, and tongues will stand before Him and proclaim His holy name.

Psalm 96: For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
    he is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the nations are idols,
    but the Lord made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before him;
    strength and glory are in his sanctuary.

11 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
    let the sea resound, and all that is in it.
Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them;
    let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.
13 Let all creation rejoice before the
Lord, for he comes,
    he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness
    and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Praise the LORD!
