My selfish heart cries out, “What about me?” Deep inside my heart is a root of self-centeredness. I forget sometimes about all that God is doing, all that is unseen, never to be known by me. And I forget to trust Him.
Spiritual forces are at work. God’s purpose is unfolding in ways I cannot see or know. There is a battle for the hearts of people. Our readings from Job show that people have been struggling to understand this battle, and God’s ways, for a very long time.
In the midst of his struggling, Job knows that God is way bigger than he is – bigger than he (or I) will ever know. In a poem about God’s power, Job concludes with:
“And these are but the outer fringe of his [God’s] works; How faint the whisper we hear of him! Who then can understand the thunder of his power?” Job 26:14
If I could gather together everything that I know about God, it would be but a faint whisper I hear of him.
There is a war between Good and Evil, and ultimately between the Lamb and the beast.
“The ten horns you saw are the kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but who for one hour will receive authority as kings along with the beast. They have one purpose and will give their power and authority to the beast. They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings – and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers.” Revelation 17:12-14
“For God has put it into their hearts to accomplish his purpose by agreeing to give the beast their power to rule, until God’s words are fulfilled.” Revelation 17:17
God is triumphant. God’s purpose is always fulfilled. The power of God reigns over all. But let me never forget to trust Him to accomplish the victory.
Dear God, May I always remember you have a purpose. I know that you are all-powerful. I know that you overcome evil. You win. Help me to never forget that a spiritual battle is raging. Fill my heart with trust in you.
