The scene is ugly. As this example about Ninevah, woe to those at odds with God.
“The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord is avenging and wrathful; the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies. The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; he dries up all the rivers; Bashan and Carmel wither; the bloom of Lebanon withers. The mountains quake before him; the hills melt; the earth heaves before Him, the world and all who dwell in it. Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger?” (Nahum 1:2-6 ESV)
But those on God’s side get to help with the victory.
“Let the praises of God be in their throats and the two-edged swords in their hands, to execute vengeance on the nations and punishments on the peoples, to bind their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron, to execute on them the judgement written! This honor for all his godly ones. Praise the Lord!” (Psalms 149:6-9 ESV)
And the Apostle Paul reminds us that we have the good news to share with others to help them out of their darkness.
“For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:5-6 ESV)
