“As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people both now and forevermore.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭125:2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Have you ever felt alone? Lonely? If you are human than you probably have. I remember some of my loneliest times have been when I was in a large crowd. The number of people doesn’t determine whether one is lonely, but the level of closeness and connection one has with others.

This Psalm of Ascent is such a beautiful reminder of our place in this world. I don’t know about you but I especially need this reminder right now. I have spent more time alone in the last 6 months than the last 6 years. For 3 months I didn’t get a hug. I had very lonely days. By the grace of God, I also had such incredible moments of feeling Gods nearness.

To be reminded by the Psalmist that we are surrounded by God is such a gift. In the days that are lonely and anxious…I am surrounded by God. In the days that are filled with conflict and fear…I am surrounded by God. When thinking about the future of our world…we are surrounded by God.

This reminds me/us that…

  • I matter…you matter.
  • We are valued.
  • We are never alone.
  • We are worthy of being protected.
  • We can rest on the surrounding support of God.

These truths rest in the character of God. They are true not because I have done anything special but because of who my God is. He will never not be that way. That’s a promise that will never be broken.

Dear God, we are yours. You love us and know how best to protect us. Thank you for your surrounding presence. Your presence is comfort for our souls. Amen.
