Genesis 6-8; Psalm 104; Mark 3

If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.” (Mark 3:24-25 ESV). These quotes are most commonly attributed to Abraham Lincoln, but Jesus said it first. A country, a business, a family or a marriage cannot survive if it is divided. A marriage is a covenant.

A covenant has unique terms unlike what the world would call a commitment. A covenant is a spiritual agreement, giving oneself to the other and having the strength to uphold your part of the promise. In Genesis we read of the covenant that God made with Noah. “Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, ‘I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.” (Genesis 8:20-22 ESV)

Praise be to God for showing us what covenant is about. God keeps His promises and so should we in all of our relationships.

May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in his works, who looks on the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains and they smoke! I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the Lord. Let sinners be consumed from the earth, and let the wicked be no more! Bless the Lord, O my soul! Praise the Lord!” (Psalm 104:31-35 ESV)
