Numbers 21-23

“God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” (Numbers 23:19, NIV)

Immutability. It’s one of my favorites of God’s qualities….

“But you remain the same, and your years will never end.” (Psalm 102:27)

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” (James 1:17)

God simply will not change. What He says, He will do. What He promises, He will fulfill. He is immutable.

People, however, do change. Friends move away or break trusts. Spouses—even the most faithful of spouses!—are still humanly fallible. Circumstances aren’t always reliable, either. Illness, job loss, economic upheavals…the only constant in the world, in fact, is change.

How I need God’s immutability! How I crave it in a world of chaos and unknowns. I’m thankful that He uses the unreliability of this world to draw me closer to Him. And even though I sometimes wish that God were human, so that I could understand His ways, I am so grateful that He is higher. Better. Immutable.

Lord God, thank You that You never change! You are faithful—always faithful. What You say, You will do. What You promise, You will fulfill. I rest in Your constancy. You are constantly loving and merciful, constantly holy and true. Thank You, God! Amen.
