Deuteronomy 32:15-34:12 and Joshua 1:1-9

As a high school senior, our oldest child is currently planning for college. The thought of her living away from us for the first time is scary to think about as a parent. Will she remember all of the spiritual training she’s been given, able to face anything that comes her way with integrity and courage? Reading the Lord’s charge to Joshua, as he takes over for Moses following his death, struck me as a good send off to a young adult as they face a new chapter in their lives.

“Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (1 Joshua:7-9 ESV)

Key points:

  1. Meditate on God’s word all the time.

2. Live according to what God’s word says.

3. Be strong and courageous.

4. Do not be scared or discouraged.

5. Always remember that God is there with you.

These are words to live by as a young adult, about to enter college. They are also words for middle aged adults like me to live by. It was intended for Joshua, but I think it applies to all of God’s people.

Help me and those reading this to remember to live as You want us to live. Live according to Your rules, with courage and strength. Live reminded daily that You are always with us no matter what. Thank you for that comfort.
