Today’s passage starts with a long list of what our God of the universe does/says/is that goes way beyond our power and comprehension. We read these words from Job…
Then Job replied:
2 “Indeed, I know that this is true.
But how can mere mortals prove their innocence before God?
3 Though they wished to dispute with him,
they could not answer him one time out of a thousand.
4 His wisdom is profound, his power is vast.
Who has resisted him and come out unscathed?
5 He moves mountains without their knowing it
and overturns them in his anger.
6 He shakes the earth from its place
and makes its pillars tremble.
7 He speaks to the sun and it does not shine;
he seals off the light of the stars.
8 He alone stretches out the heavens
and treads on the waves of the sea.
9 He is the Maker of the Bear[a] and Orion,
the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.
10 He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed,
miracles that cannot be counted.
11 When he passes me, I cannot see him;
when he goes by, I cannot perceive him.
12 If he snatches away, who can stop him?
Who can say to him, ‘What are you doing?’
13 God does not restrain his anger;
even the cohorts of Rahab cowered at his feet.
(Job 9:1-13 [NIV])
Let’s list out what he is capable of or does in his own might and power:
- He is so wise we cannot argue with him, vv. 3&4
- He moves mountains without their knowledge, v. 5
- He can shake the earth, v. 6
- He makes nature (stars & sun) obey him, v.7
- He stretches out the heavens and walks on water, v.8
- He created the stars, v. 9
- He is a miracle maker and does wonders we cannot comprehend, v. 10
- We cannot see him, v. 11
- We cannot stop him from doing anything, v. 12
- No one can stand against his anger, v.13
Now perhaps we look at this and this context is right, that these are attributes of God that may fill us with fear and vexation. However, another way to look at it is that this is the person I would want to put my faith in not only for the here and now, but for all eternity. The fact that he is this mighty God brings comfort and peace to my soul. In the world we live in today we need our God to be all of this.
Put your faith in God today and stop your fear and worry. He is more than enough to take care of it all. God bless you all.
