Psalm 105:25-106:33

So He brought His people out with joy, His chosen ones with singing. And He gave them the lands of the nations, and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples’ toil, that they might keep His statutes and observes His laws. Praise the Lord!” (Psalm 105:43-45 ESV)

God brough His chosen people out of the Egypt, out of their slavery. He was their liberator just like Jesus frees us from our bondage to sin.

Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever! Who can utter the mighty deeds of the Lord, or declare all His praise? Blessed are they who observe justice, who do righteousness at all times!” (Psalm 106:1-3 ESV)

The Lord was so good to them and He is so good to us. Shouldn’t that make us want to praise Him and do good to others, witnessing of His goodness?

But they soon forgot His works; they did not wait for His counsel. But they had a wanton craving in the wilderness, and put God to the test in the desert; He gave them what they asked, but sent a wasting disease among them.”……….”They made a calf in Horeb and worshipped a metal image. They exchanged the glory of God for the image of an ox that eats grass. They forgot God, their savior, who had done great things in Egypt, wondrous works in the land of Ham, and awesome deeds by the Red Sea. Therefore He said He would destroy them- had not Moses, His chosen one, stood in the breach before Him, to turn away His wrath from destroying them.” (Psalm 106:12-15 & 19-23 ESV)

The Israelites were so blessed and yet they had short term memory loss. They had just been delivered out of bondage after forty years and yet they go and make idols and curse God. What??!! But don’t we do the same thing? We praise God when things go well but quickly become complacent and forget to thank Him when our lives are just ordinary. Notice that Moses stood in the way of God destroying them with His wrath, much like Jesus took the punishment for us to spare us from the wrath we so deserve.

May we see the examples here as an object lesson of what not to do, but also to focus us on being truly thankful for the gift of salvation that we have.
