“I will take from the nations and gather you from all the countries and bring you into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put My Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God. And I will deliver you from all your uncleanesses. And I will summon the grain and make it abundant and lay no famine upon you. I will make the fruit of the tree and the increase of the field abundant, that you may never again suffer the disgrace of famine among the nations.” (Ezekiel 36:24-30 ESV)
God makes some big promises to Israel. He would give them new hearts and new spirits and would be delivered. They had a job to do by obeying His commands and walking in His statutes. God was going to fulfill His end of the covenant. Israel would never suffer in this way again.
God in His mercy, gives Ezekiel a vision to share with the Israelites in the Valley of Dry Bones.
“Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and will cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.” (Ezekiel 37:4-6 ESV)
This passage reminds me of the creation story in Genesis when God breathed life into Adam and then into Eve. Only He can cause life or bring life back. Then we move onto God opening the graves and bringing them back to life, much like He will do when we die but trust in Him for new life.
“Therefore prophesy, and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will bring you into the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the Lord.” (Ezekiel 37:12-14 ESV)
God said it and it is true. He cannot lie. It’s not in His nature. He has spoken and they did know and will know that He is the Lord. Praise God!
