Leviticus 24-25; Psalm 81; Hebrews 9

This morning I’d like to take a step back and look at two systems. My observations flow a bit away from the passages above, but can be found in these as well.

What we see is a study in contrasts between Leviticus and Hebrews. The difference between an old covenant and a new one, an imperfect one and a perfect one, one that involves the blood of most like likely hundreds of thousands of animals versus the blood of but one man. What a contrast.

In today’s reading we don’t find instructions about blood offerings, but about grain and flour offerings. These were precise and intricate and a penalty would paid if not done right. In other chapters in Leviticus we do find instructions about sin blood offerings. The loss of animal life to temporarily atone for sin was staggering. Here’s one theologians take on just one festival:

The Bible gives no record of how many sacrifices were offered each day, but if even a small fraction of a percentage of the millions of Israelites brought a sacrifice each day, then hundreds or thousands of sacrifices were made every day. On the day of passover, one lamb was sacrificed for every family in Israel. Tens of thousands of sacrifices were made on that one day alone. (Everlasting Truths Blog)

Another theologian makes this observation about the Feast of Booths:

When you look at some of the festivals, the numbers are even more astounding. Take a look at the Festival of Shelters, for instance, discussed starting in (Numbers) 29:12. The Festival of Shelters was a seven day festival, with sacrifices required each day in addition to the normal daily sacrifices:
Day One
13 Young Bulls
Two Rams
14 one-year-old lambs
78 quarts of choice flour to go with the bulls
8 quarts of flour to go with the lambs
28 quarts of flour for the lambs
1 Male goat for sin offering along with grain and liquid
Day Two
12 Young Bulls
Two Rams
14 one-year lambs
108 quarts choice flour (Bulls: 6 * 12 == 72) (Rams: 4 * 2 == 8) (Lambs 2 * 14 == 28)
1 Male goat for sin offering along with grain and liquid
This list goes on for each of the seven days of the festival, with the bull count lessening by one per day. So that leaves a total of:
Lambs: 14 * 7 == 98
Rams: 2 * 7 == 14
Bulls: 13 + 12 + 11 + 10 + 9 + 8 + 7 == 70
Flour for Lambs: 2 * 98 == 196 Quarts
Flour for Rams: 4 * 14 == 56 Quarts
Flour for Bulls: 6 * 14 == 84 Quarts
(Everyday Bible Blog)

And this person didn’t know if this was per family or for the whole nation. The biblical text is unclear. However over a years time as you start adding up just for the Israelites how many animals were sacrificed it had to be in the hundreds of thousands. That’s the old covenant.

The sad thing is that Israel could never keep all the laws and festivals and offerings. They were a people that would not follow strong after God. In fact historians state that Israel didn’t even keep all that’s found in Leviticus and Numbers long enough to celebrate the Year of Jubilee. When on the fiftieth year the land and slaves all went back to their orginal owners or set free. And the land would receive a rest. That is observed in our third passage today from Psalm 81.

Now we come to the new covenant. One Man/God gave his life and shedded his blood for billions on this earth. Those that ever lived or would live. Hebrews 9 gives us this contrast:

Now the first covenant also had regulations for ministry and an earthly sanctuary… 11 But Christ has appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come. In the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands (that is, not of this creation), 12 he entered the most holy place once for all time, not by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow, sprinkling those who are defiled, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works so that we can serve the living God? (Hebrews 9:1, 11-14 [CSB])

To do what he has done he could only be the very God of this universe and a person we need to put our faith and hope in for salvation. Have you done that yet. Today would be a perfect time to become a member of God’s family.

Genesis 49, Luke 2, Job 15, 1 Corinthians 3

Read at – http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis%2049,%20Luke%202,%20Job%2015,%201%20Corinthians%203&version=NKJV

Genesis 49   And Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days:  … All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father spoke to them. And he blessed them; he blessed each one according to his own blessing.

            Lord God, my father gave me his blessing before he died. My mother, who is aging, gave me her blessing, too. Lord God, You have had me bless my children and pronounce to them the good which You have in store for them, and we eagerly await Your unfolding of their futures. Yet Father, the Greatest of all Blessings is what You bestowed on me the millisecond that You adopted me so You would be my Father! You gave me an inheritance that will never spoil, You give my Your promises in Your Word that I am to live by, and You made plans for me and are continually unfolding my purpose. – and the One Who died to give me my blessing was You, Lord Jesus Christ. You gave me Yourself, my Very Great Reward!  (1)

Luke 2            Joseph also went, …with Mary… And she brought forth her firstborn Son, …and laid Him in a manger.

Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold,… suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:  “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

So the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.”  And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child.

His name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.

And behold, there was a man, Simeon, … it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. So he came by the Spirit into the temple. … he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said: For my eyes have seen Your salvation… A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel.”

Anna, a prophetess, … coming in that instant she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.

At the Feast of the Passover… when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem … the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. …Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. …And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” … And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

           The Father with His Son – Lord God Almighty, You were SO excited and proud at the birth of Your Baby Boy Jesus!! You had the whole sky explode with Brilliant Angelic Lights and Music!! You inspired the shepherds to leave their flocks running to greet Your Son for His arrival to earth! And they told everyone about Your Special Son!! Simeon was overjoyed to see the Promised Messiah, just as You had told in a preliminary notification! Anna was excited to give You thanks and tell everyone about Jesus Who would bring people redemption!

            You nurtured Your Beloved Son Jesus by Your Grace! And Your Son loved You so much that He wanted to be right in the midst of You and Your Work! He had been doing it already since the teachers were astonished by His understanding of You and Your Word! And You continued to bless Your Son Jesus!

            Father, You treat me and all of Your children, even those yet to be adopted by You, No differently! You are overwhelmed with excited anticipation for the time when we say “Yes!” to surrender to have Your Father-Headship over us! You send us Your people to encourage and build us up in what You say about us! You always talk to us, though we don’t hear or follow You as well as Your Son Jesus. And You put Your Grace and Favor on us – until You take us home to be with You permanently. (1) (2)

Job 15           Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said: “Should a wise man answer with empty knowledge,…Yes, you cast off fear, And restrain prayer before God. … Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; Yes, your own lips testify against you.

            Sadly, the very words that Eliphaz told to Job were words that Eliphaz should have said to himself. Later the Lord God told Eliphaz,My wrath is aroused against you and your two friends, for you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has. Now therefore … offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and My servant Job shall pray for you. For I will accept him, lest I deal with you according to your folly; because you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has.” Job 42:7-8

            Too many times I have thought one way when the opposite was true, and very sadly I have spoken it. Lord God I have incurred Your wrath because of it! You called me to repent and learning from it. (Thank You for your Mercy Lord!) Yet many times, You, Lord God have held me shut to silence! Thank You!! I am always learning because I am sooo faulty!

             You tell me to discern, not condemn. To judge rightly by fruits and to look for the Progression of growth not Perfection. Judgment, meaning understanding and analysis, for the purpose of pointing people to You is good. Judgment, meaning condemning, is pointing them to hell, which is not good. Yes, Lord God, I know people are going to hell without change – Ah Ha! But that is where You come in!! Pointing to The Savior Who saves us from our sins that condemn us – that is Success Your Way!! Bravo my King Jesus!! (3)

1 Corinthians 3       “I fed you with milk and not with solid food .. for you are still carnal.

            God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor. For we are God’s fellow workers

            Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.

            Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. … And you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.”

            Lord God, I had been on milk for years! Until You called me to participate in a weekly in-depth Bible study where Your Word changed my heart, thoughts, perceptions, emotions and actions! – Your subtle and powerful work of Your Holy Spirit changed me from the inside out – while I was unconscious of the changes. All I knew was that I was in Your Potter’s Hand.

            Lord Jesus Christ, You have made me Your slave worker. I am SO honored, and especially to be a co-laborer with So many of Your fabulous, humble servant-children! Please keep their temples, and mine, clean and burning bright with Your Love and abhor the sins of the flesh! There is TOO much harvest to reap to waste workers or cause people to turn away from You. We are but dust and You are our Amazing Potter. You mix me with Your Holy Spirit living water, reach down deep within me and change me in places where no one can reach or fathom. I am completely powerless in the process – except I can yield, grieve the loss (of whatever) and be cleansed, renewed and newly empowered for Your next adventure of work under You! (4)

Gen. 32; Mark 3; Esther 8; Rom. 3

He makes things new.

These brothers at odds, and understandably so–one tricked his way into an inheritance. Their family divided. This is the start of a nation and people–though threaded thick with sin-theme (all of us). But God would make something new from it–something better. Jacob wrestles alone with God at night …

28 “Your name will no longer be Jacob,” the man told him. “From now on you will be called Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have won.” Genesis 32:28 NLT.

Made new.

A people on the verge of destruction–Haman’s plot sealed with a king’s signet ring. God uses Esther to bring about a different ending–and Mordecai writes words that empower and protect the Jews. There was great joy. A fate reversed, and hope–

made new.

Jesus on the Sabbath …

Jesus went into the synagogue again and noticed a man with a deformed hand. Since it was the Sabbath, Jesus’ enemies watched him closely. If he healed the man’s hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath.

Jesus said to the man with the deformed hand, “Come and stand in front of everyone.” Then he turned to his critics and asked, “Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?” But they wouldn’t answer him.

He looked around at them angrily and was deeply saddened by their hard hearts. Then he said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” So the man held out his hand, and it was restored! Mark 3:1-5 NLT.

Restored. (Restored!)

Made new.

21 But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago. 22 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24 Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. 25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. Romans 3:21-25 NLT.

Sinners, fallen short of the standard–declared righteous.

Made new.

Father God, when I wrestle with you, and you make me new. I hold out my hand to you, and you restore what is broken–even if others say you can’t (or shouldn’t). You make me new. Kindness undeserved, your mercy–thankfully received. My life in your hands, new joy (my fate reversed–from death to life!) and hope. Declared righteous, and yours.

2 Chronicles 17, 2 Chronicles 18, 2 Corinthians 6

Jehoshaphat…sought God…and walked in His commandments. Therefore the Lord established the kingdom in his hand. 2 Chronicles 18:4-5

 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 2 Corinthians 6:15

 “Come out from among them …And I will receive you.” “I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6:17-18

 Read athttp://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2Chron17,18;%202Cor6&version=NKJV

2 Chronicles 17        Jehoshaphat…strengthened himself against Israel…he did not seek the Baals, but sought the God…and walked in His commandments and not according to the acts of Israel.

            At this time Israel was not following the Lord God but worshipping false gods.

            Talk about taking a stand! Jehoshaphat didn’t ignore Israel, give platitudes, agreements, or compromises saying ‘your truth works for you, my truth works for me’. – No, Jehoshaphat “strengthened himself against Israel”! Boldly Not being ‘politically correct’!

            Jehoshaphat was a man of conviction and action! Not only was Jehoshaphat against Israel, but he was against the false gods in his own land AND he taught everyone about the Lord God!! “moreover he removed the high places and wooden images from Judah. So they…had the Book of the Law of the Lord with them; they went throughout all the cities of Judah and taught the people.”

             Why would Jehoshaphat do this? Because “his heart took delight in the ways of the Lord”. Jehoshaphat’s heart couldn’t be happier because he ‘heard’ the Lord and walked in His Ways. He didn’t need any one else’s approval or relationship. Jehoshaphat’s HEART DELIGHTED in the LORD. The center of Jehoshaphat’s core had delight, joy, peace and the Presence of the Lord God! It is what motivated him to do all he did! 1

             Aren’t I supposed to be this way too? Of course! Especially since I have tangible blessings from the Lord God: The full Bible. The knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ by His Word. The God’s promises for the end of His story. The revelation of  Who my Atonement is. The indwelling 24/7/365 Presence of the Holy Spirit within me.  Yet I rejoice in Jehoshaphat! What a man for God! May I be at least as much as he is!!  2

             And what was God’s response?

Faithfulness, loyalty and fruitfulness to Jehoshaphat and his realm of influence.

The Lord established the kingdom in his hand

The Book of the Law of the Lord was taught to all the people.

The fear of the Lord fell on all the kingdoms of the lands that were around Judah, so that they did not make war against Jehoshaphat.

Some kingdoms brought Jehoshaphat presents, tribute, and more

Jehoshaphat became increasingly powerful,

Jehoshaphat had much property and mighty men of valor

2 Chronicles 18                   By marriage Jehoshaphat allied himself with Ahab.  After some years he went down to visit Ahab in Samaria;

             What happened to this valiant man of God? God’s Word tells us, “Jehoshaphat had riches and honor in abundance.” Trading righteousness for pleasure and pride, Jehoshaphat unwittingly subverted his own resolve against Israel “by marriage he allied himself with Ahab”, the king of Israel.

             The effect is heard: Jehoshaphat answered Ahab, “I am as you are, and my people as your people; we will be with you in the war.”  What? How did this happen? Some years before Jehoshaphat was delighting in God and independent of the powers around him, standing valiant against sin patterns. Now Jehoshaphat has fallen so far that he views himself and his people as being like Israel! 3

             The Lord’s gifts became the source of Jehoshaphat’s joy instead of his heart continually delighting in the Lord God. When I let my physical senses distract me from Fear of the Lord, it causes spiritual blindness, misplaced trust and unholy alliances. 4

2 Corinthians 6            Lord God Almighty, may I never misconstrue blessings to be for my own gratification. You alone are my very Great Reward. You command me: I am blessed to be a blessing. I am to work together with Jesus Christ to plead for others “not to receive the grace of God in vain. Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” I will accomplish this through many types of pain, discomfort, by God’s truth, power and more, and within every possible circumstance. 5

            Lord Jesus, You have shown me the deep pain of eternal souls who live for Very temporary pleasures. Hell is for real, just as Heaven is. I take Your advice to heart: You are restricted by your own affections…Do not be unequally yoked…For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God.

            Lord Jesus thank You for calling me to grow more intimate with You daily and go far away from surface pleasure and pride. I desire to Live, exist and have my being in Your Word and Holy Spirit, abiding in Your Love. Lord, have my eyes open to the walking dead around me, my ears attentive to Your Voice of Truth and wisdom, and my heart submitted to Your compassion so You will move through me for Your great work to be done, now and always for Your delight and glory! Amen 6

Dear Reader, God pleads with you and me today:

Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.”“I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the Lord Almighty.”

Judges 1, Judges 2, Judges 3, Luke 12:32-59

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Judges%201,2,3;%20Luke%2012:32-59&version=NKJV

 God’s People in Pain ~ God’s people Rule ~ God’s Kingdom Comes

Judges 1             “Judah shall go up … fight against the Canaanites …  and the Lord delivered” But the tribes “did not drive out the” surrounding peoples.

Judges 2              The Lord came…said: you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land…tear down their altars. But you have not obeyed My voice. -Therefore… they shall be thorns in your side, and their gods shall be a snare to you.’ So…all the children of Israel…lifted up their voices and wept…Then the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baals…Yet they would not listen to their judges…Then the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel;

Judges 3            they gave their daughters…they served their gods…again did evil in the sight of the Lord.

                       The Almighty, Holy, Faithful God continuously protected His people and set them free from their enemies. God gave them a kingdom on earth and made them accountable to Him. But time and time again God’s people ignored God’s Word, Character, Commands and Love for them. They turned away from Him to worship and obey what they could see, feel, and hear. They mingled their hearts and lives with demons and idols. God’s people did evil in His sight so God’s anger was against them. Even though they “lifted up their voices and wept”, “Yet they would not listen”. 2 Corinthians 5:7; Hebrews 11:6; 2 Chronicles 11:15; Revelation 9:20

Points to ponder –    The Lord God is worthy of my complete, full hearted obedience. Partial obedience is DISobedience. God requires 100% loyalty, trust and faith in Action.

                 People refused God’s protective law by NOT driving out what influenced them to sin. Inaction was rejection of God.

                     God’s people, though loved by God, alienated themselves from Him. By their allegiance to personal pride and lust, their lives were filled with many types of deep pain. God’s people proved to be unfaithful and double-minded/ hearted.

                     It wasn’t about the people, it was all about God! What would have Glorified the Lord God and brought His people unshakable Joy? Living with God in the freedom of the Promised Land AND thus showing and introducing the idolaters to God, for them love, worship and be freed by the Living God too! They all would have had eternal life! And God’s peace would have reigned through them all!

                 Lord, reveal to me how I live by my physical, temporal, self-willed senses and NOT by faith and Holy Spirit “sight” in trusting Your Reality of Truth in order to please You. Show me how my mind changes due to fear and “discomfort” so I do not Love by faith in Jesus Who sacrificed His life for me to NOW live a vibrant eternal life by His Word and Power.

Luke 12:32-59          “Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell what you have and give…provide…a treasure in the heavens that does not fail…there your heart will be also.”

                  Lord Jesus’ Words ringing clear and true, for the Israelites, nowadays and Jesus’ time! I hear the same tune, “Turn from you see, feel, and hear. Do not mingle your heart with demons and idols, but trust God and thereby receive the good Kingdom your Father pleasures to give you!”

                 Jesus, please awaken many to disown their earthly treasures, loyalties and idolatries that cause their hearts to pain and fear, so not to perish. Please have Your Word Drive Out the thoughts, words, habits, values and lusts so we do not turn our backs against Your Father. Jesus, you had me born-again for God’s Kingdom living and rule under You. Please, Lord, increase Your territory of Love throughout myself and my sphere of influence.

Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching…Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.…Blessed is that servant whom…his master will find so doing when he comes…that he will make him ruler over all that he hasBUT IF that servant…begins to beat the…servants, and…be drunk, the master…will come …when he is not aware, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers…For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.

My Kingdom of God agenda:            What have I traded permanent for temporary? How am I using the time and tools God has allotted me?

             What territory have I left laid to waste? What “Christian” thinking of “grace” has allowed the weeds and thorns to infest and rot my “territory” because my passionate desire for God’s gleaming righteousness and glory has dimmed by excuses, rationalizations and compromise? Am I Driving Out unholy thinking with the Word of God and acting upon it?

            Am I being truthful to myself and with those in my charge? Or am I watering down the Gospel and Jesus’ Blood? Am I selling out cheap grace using a “get out of hell” card without James 1-4 enacted? What kind of servant am I? Much is REQUIRED of me by God.

Jesus said, “I came to send fire on the earth …to give…division…one house will be divided…but how is it you do not discern this time?”

                  What time is it now? “In the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents,” and “rumors of wars”.

“I tell you, you shall not depart from there till you have paid the very last mite.”

 This Good News requires my responsibility and accountability to my Master, Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

                 Am I using God’s eternal Tool, the Word of God? Am I praying without ceasing for God’s Holy Spirit counsel and Doing what He says? Jesus gives life to those who seek, ask and receive in God’s terms. Lord Jesus, have me follow hard after You and Drive Out whatever thwarts for Your cleansed temple within me! Have Your Kingdom come on earth as it is in Heaven.
