1Samuel 26; 1Corinthians 7; Ezekiel 5; Psalm 42,43

Abishai said to David, “Today God has delivered your enemy into your hands.  Now let me pin him to the ground with one thrust of my spear; I won’t strike him twice.” But David said to Abishai, “Don’t destroy him! Who can lay a hand on the Lord’s anointed and be guiltless? As surely as the Lord lives,” he said, “the Lord himself will strike him; either his will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and perish.  But the Lord forbid that I should lay a hand on the Lord’s anointed. Now get the spear and water jug that are near his head, and let’s go.”   1 Samuel 26:8-11

You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men.  1 Corinthians 7:23

Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.  Psalm 42:11

Many times and even just recently, I had the opportunity to strike back at someone who had offended me; one in particular was just mean and hurtful.  It would have been so easy, the moment was ripe for my vengeance.  I could have taken things into my own hands and retaliated, made my point clear to my offender, righted the wrong, sought revenge.  However, I considered the fact that I would not be blameless if I used my tongue to strike a person down, even if they deserved it.  I will confess that I did fester for awhile and that was not pretty.  Eventually I did come around and like 1Corinthians 7:23 says; I was bought at a price, I will not become slave to man or myself or my thoughts of revenge.

Instead I did choose to put my hope in God and my soul was restored, so much that I was able to fall down and pray for my verbal attacker who is God’s creation just as I am.  I pray that they are comforted and freed from their burden.

Father I praise you for turning my heart from bitterness to compassion and as I continue to pray for the ones who hurt me, I also pray for those who have succumbed to their burdens and fears and pray that they allow God to comfort them and restore their soul.

In Jesus name, Amen.
